Burger 650 at Paul Ricard

The Blez Burger King outside the legendary Circuit Paul Ricard en route back to Blighty after surviving the week-long mayhem that was the Moto Tour de France in October 2003. Built in 1969 and financed by the aniseed drink magnate whose name it bears, The Ricard circuit was a place of pilgrimage for bikers from all over Europe throughout the 1980s and 1990s when it was the venue for the Bol d'Or 24 hour endurance race. I took a series of FFs there in those years: The Flying Banana in 1983, the Doc Vass Quasar in 1984, the John Bruce BSAFF in 1985 (except I never quite got it there!) and the Newell twin head steer LC 350 Phasar in 1986. The track was also the venue for both F1 and motorcycle Grand Prix races in those years and Elio de Angelis was tragically killed while testing there in 1986 when he crashed at Signes corner at the end of the mile-long Mistral straight. In 1999 the circuit was sold to Excelis, a Bernie Ecclestone company, and the track was rebuilt for testing purposes, although some racing still takes place and there has been talk of having F1 at the venue once again.
